British-Canadian Alexander Dobson makes his debut at Florentine Opera
Mozart's rakish antihero faces his comeuppance in this hugely successful production that first won critics over in 2006 both in Milwaukee and across the country. This revival staging is the penultimate opera of the 83rd season and is led by British-Canadian baritone Alexander Dobson in his Florentine Opera debut who sings the role of the aging lothario.
First staged in 1787, Don Giovanni has seen various types of incarnation, from a feckless destroyer of lives, to a calculated lover and leaver of women, and a wonderful ability to convince himself as an innocent survivor of bad fortune. His extensive sexual conquests upon reflection in this story is his own vain attempt to escape his own impending eternity in hell, and the price that he must ultimately pay for his sins.
