La Sylphide is followed by a world premiere by Timothy O'Donnell!
Danish dancer-turned choreographer Dinna Bjorn's adaptation of La Sylphide starts proceedings for this performance, a mythical forest-set ballet that tells a tragic tale of unrequited love between a handsome but betrothed Scottish lord and a nymph (a role that Bjorn has danced herself), combining classical ballet with Scottish traditional dance. This is followed by Sans Pleurer, a world premiere production by newly appointed lead principle, and choreographer in residence, Timothy O'Donnell.
Bjorn's revival of La Sylphide is based on August Bournonville's own adaptation of the original 1832 French ballet that sadly did not survive. Marking the dawn of the Romantic era of dance, Bournonville's version is a regular part of the Royal Danish Ballet repertory since debuting in 1836.
