A story as timeless as love itself
Gounod's operatic imagining of Shakespeare's iconic tale of forbidden love is retold in this sweeping production from the Florentine Opera. Starring Duke Kim in his FO debut as Romeo alongside Emily Pogorelc as his doomed Juliette. One of the most recognizable of Shakespeare's works, the story follows these two young lovers as they fall for each against the backdrop of a decades-old feud between their respective families.
What is the story?
If you thought your family was dysfunctional, try being the two most famous young lovers in literature. Whilst Romeo Capulet and Juliet Montague are concerned with love at first sight, their rival clans will stop at nothing to destroy the other. When it becomes clear the match will not be tolerated, the pair hatches a scheme to escape the embittered streets of Verona; only the outcome depends on some dangerous trickery that might just see their fates entwined forever, and not in the marriage bed as previously planned.
